What is Unknown Devices and How to Fix it

INTRODUCTION:
Base on my experience troubleshooting computers, sometimes the computer system (windows) unable to detect the hardware changes whenever we plug in storage (like thumb drive, memory card, etc). Or after installing all drivers there are still driver missing which listed as "unknown device" in device manager.
So here i would like to share my experience how to solve this problem because there are many reason why your computers get the unknown device problem.

IF you have the error and prompt with " Disk management console view is not up to date" whenever you insert memory card or usb drive you can refer my tutorial here:

CONTENT:

1. Unknown device - in device manager
Devices that detected as unknown device after installing windows.

2. Unknown device - USB storage and New Hardware
Unknown device appear after inserting USB storage such as thumdrive into the USB slot or other computer port.

Note: to open device manager click START and on the serach box type DEVMGMT.MSC and press ENTER. In windows 8 right click on lower left corner at the power user start button and select device manager.

1 - UNKNOWN DEVICE - IN DEVICE MANAGER
You will see picture like this.

 

 NOTE:
The solution is step by step process, which is say A didnt work, so move to solution B.
If you didnt find unknown device and theres no hardware detected after insert the USB device into the USB slot, click VIEW in device manager and select SHOW HIDDEN DEVICE.

1A: INSTALL AND UNISTALL
1. Right click on the unknown device. Select uninstall. It will disappear from the list.
2. Right lcik again on any device there and select scan for hardware changes.
3. A new hardware found displayed and select automatically install driver.

1B: IDENTIFYING THE UNKNOWN DEVICE AND GET THE APPROPRIATE DRIVER.
1. To identify what is the unknown device, first we must get the hardware ID.

My hardware ID is not listed here, what to do?
-post your hardware ID here and i will recommend the compatible driver for you.
Another trick: Google the hardware ID and you will get the information about the device and drivers.

2. USB STORAGE AND NEW HARDWARE.

This section will discuss the problem with USB drive such as thumb drive and memory card which detected as unknow device.

SECTION 2A:
1. First thing to do is similar with previous post section 1A.
2. Try to plug the USB into other port.
3. If still didnt work try the USB on other computer, if still detected as unknow means there are problem with the hardware. It may refer to faulty hardware.
4. If it work on other computer and not yours, maybe you are missing USB driver/OS patch/upgrade/fix which you can download from your computer manufacture site.

SECTION 2B:
1. Open drive management by click start and type DRVMGMT.MSC and press ENTER.
2. Look at the drive listed and see if the disk is detected. If not means there are problem your your hardware. Test it with other computer and if detected on other computer you must try with different usb slot on your computer.
3. For memory card make sure you computer can support the size of the card, example some computer only can read up to 2GB memory reader, and unable to detect or read higher than that.
4. Malware and virus maybe one of the cause but it never happen to me and no report from users about this.

EXPERT MODE:

Generally speaking, people who like computers love to try anything to fix and test.

I always have multiple OS in my computers and normally if i have problem with USB detected as unknown i will test it on Ubuntu or other linux distribution such as linux mint. (I always change my linux OS). If you have Mac OS it will not detect storage in FAT and NTFS.
If my linux can read it, i backup the file and reformat the USB. So far there is only 2 result i got, if it detected reformat than when i plug in windows OS no more unknown and the USB work perfectly. If it not detected in LINUX mean it is hardware Faulty.

PERFORMANCE

This notebook is capable of carrying out minor works by using standard software: Adobe Photoshop, MS Office and others.
B815 processor pretty tough, proven beyond Mamou Intel Dual Core T4500 Intel Pentium 6200 and close in performance.
CPU performance to compete with AMD Liano.


GAME

3D games you can play here, but with the lightweight class, if heavy games like Battlefield you can not expect to be able to play with this processor.
Gaming performance is almost the same as AMD and AMD E-450 E-350.

BATTERY

Battery life when using ASUS X44H B815 Celeron processor can last 4 hours of continuous browsing and to be able to survive 3 hours 20 minutes was obtained.
If only to type survived up to 5 hours.


Final opinion

Celeron B815 includes both performance even with lower specs.
Intels performance is almost the same as the P6000 series and better than the old dual Core T4500.

For the student or the student is a viable alternative, because with limited funds can get it.

Guide To Install Compaq and HP Driver

This tutorial will show how to install Drivers in HP and Compaq model.
Difficulty: easy
Note: This guide only for drivers officially release by HP and Compaq. It will not cover manual installation using drivers from other source.

INTRODUCTION:
For HP and Compaq model, the official drivers name will start with SP which refer to SoftPaq. So
Example : SP30399 (SP is short term for softpaq)

So if your driver file not start with SP, the drivers is either not from HP or originally from HP and edited by other party.
SoftPack package is formatted with exe extension which refer to executable file. excutable file mean you can run the program by double click on it, in this case to install the driver.

INSTALLING:

1. Make sure you download the appropite driver you need. If you did not have the appropriate driver you can request here:  http://laptop-driver.blogspot.com/2012/02/request-driver-version-4.html

2. After finish downloading the driver, you will get a file which look like this:

The softpaq name SPXXXX varies base on the driver file.

3. Then double click on it to install, the best way to do it is by right click and select run as administrator".

if "right click and run as admin", you will be prompted, so click YES.

4. Next step is to follow the on screen instruction and agree with the terms and agreement.

5. Then click next until installation finish. The first installation will unpack the driver file into SWsetup folder in C drive.
6. Continue with the installation by following the on-screen instruction until installation finish and reboot.

IF you get ERROR:

"Driver Installation failed: Could not find the device for this driver"

It means the driver is not compatible with your system. You need to make sure the driver you are using is the right driver for your laptop.
Take note, HP sometimes provides more than 3 option for wireless driver, so you have to choose base on your specification or you have to test which work for you. Installing wrong driver will not harm your system but it will result in error.

An ELT Glossary Open and Closed Pairwork

Pairwork can be done either in open pairs, where two students do an activity in front of the class while the others listen, or in closed pairs - when all the students are working on an activity in pairs at the same time.

Open pairwork is a useful way to start some activities - it checks that students have understood what they have to do and provides them with a model. For example, the T might set up a What do you say? activity on polite requests in the following way. The students have the prompt situations in their books :

T : OK everyone - look at situation number 1: Youre trying to study but your flatmate is playing music very loudly and its disturbing you. Maria, what do you say, and Paolo, what do you reply?
M : Sorry Paolo. Can you turn the music down? Im trying to study.
P :  Oh OK, sorry.
T  : OK, great. All right, now can you all continue with your partners. Decide what you say in those ten situations.

Having elicited the example in open pairs, the teacher now asks the students to continue the activity in closed pairs, which maximises student involvement and ensures they get as much practice as possible. S/he will probably monitor them while they are working, but in a large class wont be able to hear what everybody says for every situation. So at the end s/he may follow-up the activity by going through all the situations again in open pairs, confirming or correcting their answers, and giving them the chance to ask questions about any alternatives they came up with.

• Definition : Activities used before a listening or reading text in order to set the scene, activate schemata, provoke interest, provide scaffolding by eg pre-teaching vocabulary etc

• Example : Before a listening on eg free time activities, students might be asked to discuss what they do in their free time and/or given a profile of the person talking on the recording and asked to predict what they think they do in their free time. 

• Other stages of the listening activity may be While listening and Post-listening.

• Pre-text activities which activate schemata help top-down processing in the While Listening stage.

• An activity such as the prediction activity above generates its own gist listening task, as the learners can then listen to check their predictions.

Using DVD and Video in Your ESL Class Part One

DVDs and videos can be used in the classroom for more than just listening comprehension. How? In this first of two articles, Keith Taylor explains.

Have you ever wondered how to use movies in your ESL classes, without just sitting your students down in front of the screen, hitting Play and sitting back to watch?

Here are a few ideas to get you started, using very short movie extracts to present and practise new language and develop communicative skills.

1 No picture

Choose a short extract (2 or 3 minutes) with plenty of sound effects. Play it with the screen covered or turned away from the students, and ask them to write down what they hear. If two of the sound effects are birds singing and a baby crying, you could use the extract to present or practice any of these language points (and Im sure you can think of more).

Some birds are singing / A baby is crying
Some birds were singing / A baby was crying
It must / might / cant be birds singing or It must / might / cant have been birds singing
I heard some birds singing / I heard a baby crying

After playing the extract, have students compare what they heard in pairs, and then elicit the language from them. Remember to show the extract with both picture and sound at the end of the activity to satisfy the students curiosity!

2 No sound

Heres the opposite idea. Show a short extract (again, 2 or 3 minutes is enough) with a lot going on, or where the characters convey a lot of emotion in their expressions, but play it with the volume off. Students can then do one of the activities below without having to worry about understanding dialogue:

• Describe what happened using narrative tenses
• Describe the scene
• Anticipate dialogue or reactions
• Arrange a cut up dialogue which you have given them.

Finally, play the extract again with sound. Having done one of these tasks, your students will be able to fit what they hear into a context much more effectively than if they had viewed the extract initially with picture and sound.

3 Jigsaw viewing

You may have done jigsaw reading activities in your class, where students have half the information, and share what they have read with another student to recreate the whole story. You can also do this with short video sequences in a number of ways:

• Half the class watches with no picture, then the other half with no sound (youll have to take half the students out of the class in each case). In pairs they then question each other to recreate the scene.
• Half the class have picture and sound, the other half just have sound. You can do this by sitting students in two rows, back to back, so that only one row can see the screen. The half who only had sound then question the other half.
• One student listens with headphones, while all the others view without sound. The student with headphones questions the others to recreate the scene.

4 Viewing on rewind

Choose a short sequence with a lot of action. For example, a woman enters an apartment, picks up the telephone, listens, looks terrified, runs out of her apartment and down the stairs, and runs off down the street. Movies are, of course, a great source for this sort of material. Play the scene backwards to the students (DVD gives more flexibility than video with the speed of playback) then have them reconstruct the story in chronological order, using narrative tenses, or future tenses, or whatever you want the linguistic focus to be. Finally, play the sequence normally so students can compare it with their version.

5 Pause / Freeze Frame

If you use pictures in your classroom for introducing new vocabulary, or for describing people and scenes, you can add a new dimension to this with the pause/freeze frame button of your video or DVD player. Hit pause when a character has an interesting expression on his or her face, is about to react to something or answer a question, or when there is a lot of colourful new vocabulary on the screen. Have students describe the character/scene, or anticipate what the character will say or do next. Release the pause button to allow students to compare their ideas with what actually happens.

Video is a motivating and effective way to bring variety to your ESL classes. Using short, sharp sequences with a clear linguistic focus, your students will go away from your class with much more than if you sit them down in front of the screen and hit play.
